Native plants are always my go to plants in any design. From serviceberries and redbuds, to coneflowers, black-eyed-susans, and switchgrasses- I love them all. So needless to say, when I was asked to help design HGTV’s 2021 Urban Oasis project which had a focus on native plants I was pretty excited.
The sponsor for the landscaping portion of the project was Airwick and they were using this exciting opportunity to promote native plants in urban spaces. The specific idea they came up with was for homeowners to plant a 1ft by 1ft space (or planter!) with native plants that also attracted pollinators such as bees and butterflies. With that in mind they also wanted to extend the native plants into the rest of the landscaping, and had compiled a list of native plants they wanted to be used.
The list consisted of a few favorites of mine but also a few I wasn’t familiar with at all. It was a bit of a challenge but after doing some research I stumbled upon the design trend called the “American meadow garden.” That particular style focused on native plants and growing them in large masses, while combining different leaf textures and colors along with blooming seasons so there was always something interesting to see.
The end result of the project looked amazing! Most of the photos were taken in June a few weeks after the project was completed and then the sweepstakes aired on HGTV in the fall of 2021. It was a great opportunity and I’m thankful to have played a small part in the project.
